You can combine two vector object paths into one based on what you want to do using these tool options. This can be done by selecting two intersecting paths and clicking these toolbar option buttons.

Adds or combines the two selected paths to form a new single path.

Uses the topmost path to remove the intersection area from the other path.

Creates a new path using the intersection area of the two paths.
